MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS
Ethan Startzman Bio:
is a native of Indianapolis.
After graduating high school, he went to Chicago to get his Degree in Jazz Performance on a scholarship from Roosevelt University.
time there, he
received two awards for Outstanding Performance at the Elkhart Jazz Festival and was one of two students to receive the Dean's grant.
also performed with Cuban pianist Chuchito Valdes Jr., Brazilian guitarist Sergio Assad, Americana band the Maryjanes, and pop act Sally Anthony as well as many jazz greats including Bobby Shew and Mike Smith.
He participated in a tour and taught bass and jazz theory for Conservatorio Mozarte in Quito, Ecuador.
then moved to Los Angeles, where he
taught bass, music theory, and rhythm section classes at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood, and worked with Latin drum set expert Chuck Silverman and World Beat's Ed Rosetti.
While there, he
helped found the rock band Finer and played with Orquesta Así Son, and Orquesta La Palabra, rated one of the best salsa bands in Los Angeles.
Ethan continues to perform with Finer and with Brazilian singer Clarice Assad.
can perform and teach in all styles of music, including afro Cuban, jazz, timba, rock, country, funk, R&B, and Brazilian.
has a knack of taking the unexplainable and making it tangible and possible for all levels of students.
