IRON MOUNTAIN - Esther Dirksen, 99, of Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000 at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.She was born Jan. 18, 1901 in Newton, Kan., the daughter of the late Henry and Grace Hanke.After attending and graduating from high school in Newton, Esther went on to attend Bethel College for two years.She eventually taught seventh and eighth grade students in Heston, Kan.She married Henry Dirksen in 1922.He preceded her in death in 1937 at the age of 40.In 1939, Esther went to work for social services, where she stayed until she retired at age 65.After that, Esther opened an adult foster care home in Iron Mountain which she maintained until the age of 84. Esther was a member of the First United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir for 59 years.She is survived by a son, Raymond (Fern) Dirksen of Kentwood, lower Michigan; grandchildren, David Dirksen of Crystal Falls, Susan Yoder of Brown Deer, Wis., Diane (Richard) Snyder of Indianapolis, Sue Ellen (Victor) Dubusson of Sugarland, Texas, and Steven (Audrey) Dirksen of East Grand Rapids, lower Michigan; a brother, Harry (Ena) Hanke of Newton; a granddaughter-in-law, Linda Brown of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren, Brandon (Jennifer) Yoder, Joshua Yoder, Olga Yoder, Yana Yoder, Michael Dirksen, Connor Dirksen, Erika Dirksen, Jeffrey Brown and Kimberly Brown; great-great-granddaughter, Emma Yoder; step-great-grandchildren, Edward (Gena) Snyder and Michelle (Pablo) Vasquez; step-great-great-grandchildren, Tony Vasquez and Malea Vasquez.She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Beva Dirksen Brown; grandchildren, Sharon Brown and Alfred Brown III and 11 brothers and sisters; and granddaughter-in-law, Margo Dirksen.A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church.
