In the last year, the 6,000-member island Moose was No. 1 -- both in the state and nationally -- in number of membership applications, with an increase of 1,114, says Ernie Casali, the lodge administrator.
And it's on track for another record year with 83 new members, almost double the state average.
"We are getting more people into the lodge because we've increased the number of events and activities, and improved our food," Casali
"When I came, there were boards covering all the windows and it was all dark and smoky in here," Casali
And more major renovations are planned, including moving the bar to a different part of the building to increase the dining area.
This increased popularity has helped the island lodge fulfill its main goal of helping the community.
The fraternity has donated more than $100,000 in the past year in money and gifts to many charities throughout Manatee County, as well as to the national MooseHeart and MooseHaven charities, Casali
The lodge has even started using social media to help find younger members.
"We send out e-mails with our lunch and dinner specials," Casali
said, "and with reminders of our event activities."
Even though the island Moose has the Gulf, good food and fun activities, Darryl Mellema, spokesman for Moose International, said active officers and members such as Zenzel, Luckerman and Casali have made the lodge No. 1 in membership.

Earlier this year, Casali
told city officials, several of whom are members of the 42-year-old lodge, about long- and short-term plans.
Eventually, the membership might pursue adding a second story.
"We are seeking advice from an experienced builder on the Island for a price guestimate," Casali

We are constantly doing some sort of improvement."
