Ernest O Henschel, MDDr. Henschel was born in Austria, served in the German navy as officer on a submarine during World War II, received a medical diploma for the University at Prague, overcame a severe case of T.B. and became certified in both Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology.He became an American citizen in 1950.Dr. Henschel became a Professor and Chairman of the Department at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1966.It was a post he would hold until his death from cancer in 1979. His medical reputation was international.Contributions to the field of anesthesiology included investigations for improved methods for the delivery of anesthesia and for avoiding complications during surgery and post operatively.He is credited with teaching his colleagues awareness of hereditary malignant hyperthemia.He was working on a predictive test for carriers of the disease.He also conducted studies on electro anesthesia and electro-sleep. Under his directionMCW was one of the first schools to include anesthesiology as a required academic study for its students," Dean Lennon said in paying tribute to Dr. Henschel.
