As soon as the Hunley's position was made known and a date was set for it to be raised, Davis & Floyd Inc. was called and put to work, according to Emmett Davis, chair and CEO of the company.
"We immediately assigned our crew of engineers and architects to locations in Baltimore, California, Toronto - any and every place that had a marine recovery facility," says Davis
."We basically asked them ‘what have you got that you want and don't want?' and put it together with very short notice. In six months it had gone from hand to product."Davis
firm completely gutted the interior of the RDA building to make room for large water tanks and overhead cranes to handle the Hunley as well as other projects now being preserved in the facility."The Hunley was our No. 1 priority, but the lab was designed for other things too," adds Davis
."Some cannons from Alabama were recovered off the coast of France and are in separate tanks at the facility. It'll take some time for those projects to be completed, but the center will continue to operate well after the Hunley is finished."Some of the world's leading archeologists have marveled at the facility, billing it as the "most complete marine center of its kind in the country by any stretch of the imagination."
