Dr. Emily Blake or Cantor Phil Sherman for a bris in NJ? Blake's demeanor seems to get much better 'ratings' on here but I am confused by this clamp situation...anyone use Blake who can explain what she does in the other room with a clamp and what kind of a technical job she does?

Dr. Emily Blake or Cantor Phil Sherman for a bris in NJ? Blake's demeanor seems to get much better 'ratings' on here but I am confused by this clamp situation...anyone use Blake who can explain what she does in the other room with a clamp and what kind of a technical job she does? I too was concerned about Emily Blake's method for my son's bris after reading some of the posts on here. But I ultimately decided to go with her anyway for a variety of reasons (one of which is that my understand is that all 'doctor-mohels' do it this way and I preferred to have a doctor). I am so glad we used her. Like another poster said, our son slept most of the time and didn't cry at all throughout the entire procedure. My in-laws are doctors and were in the prep room with Dr. Blake prior to the actual bris and could attest to me first-hand that she was soothing and professional and didn't do anything that upset the baby. She just preps so that a minimal amount of the "scary part" happens during the actual bris service, which puts everyone in the room at ease, including the parents. Our son made a tiny peep once later on in the service when he was in my arms and we let him suck on a sugar water pacifier and he was happy. He slept it off for a few hours and seems 100% after that, like he had no idea what happened. The pediatrician also told us on subsequent visits that it was a perfect job which is important. :) Additionally, we received NUMEROUS praise of the service Dr. Blake performed - she customizes it slightly to each person and you review it all in advance so everyone felt it had a more emotional and personal tone to it that felt really special. There were many tears in a positive way. It was a much better experience than I anticipated so I can fully recommend Emily Blake. [ Reply | More ] 03.24.09, 05:48 PM Flag Literally only negative on Emily Blake is that she is very chatty - on phone and stays after bris a while. But it's also nice because she is very thorough with follow up and checking the circumcision and reviewing the post care. She has a very nice, "spiritual" aura. [ Reply | More ] 03.24.09, 05:50 PM Flag We used Dr. Emily Blake and a friend who recently attended my son's bris told me that she thought the service was so beautiful and spiritual, it actually made her feel she'd like to marry someone Jewish (she never really cared before). I thought that was the best compliment she could give to the way the bris was handled. [ Reply | More ] 05.12.09, 11:58 AM Flag DO NOT use Dr. Emily Blake. We used her for my son's bris in 2010 and she did a horrible job and left most of the foreskin on him. When I called her to tell her that three different pediatric urologists said that my son needed to have it redone, she basically shrugged and said something to the effect of "These things happen.

"The issue of metzitzah b'peh shows the way in which Judaism is a thoughtful, compassionate, and smart religion," says Dr. Emily Blake, a Westchester, N.Y.-based obstetrician-gynecologist who is also a board-certified mohel.
Blake has trained with mohel Rabbi Gary Atkins of Bloomfield, who co-founded the Korayt HaBrit training program with Dr. Neil Pollock, which instructs physicians in both the medical and halachic aspects of brit milah. If the vote passes, San Franciscans who want to circumcise their babies will be forced to travel outside the city, imposing an additional financial and logistical burden on those who may not be have adequate resources, Blake says. "San Francisco is about being open and welcoming to diversity, and they're squelching diversity and limiting other people's choices," she says.
