Dr. Emery E. Alford, Director of Education
Dr. Emery E. Alford
has over twenty-one years experience in academic administration, twenty-five years of undergraduate and graduate-level teaching experience and over forty years experience as a professional musician in various symphony orchestras, dance bands, show & theater groups.
This includes one year as an administrative intern to the vice president for Academic Affairs, three years as administrative assistant to the Music Department head and fourteen years as associate professor of the percussion and jazz programs at Western Kentucky University
, eight and one-half years as department head of Humanities and Visual & Performing Arts, two years as interim director of curriculum at Broward Community College
, and eleven years as dean of Academic affairs at Hillsborough Community College's
Ybor City Campus.
Alford earned an Associate in Arts degree and Performer's Certificate from Del Mar College, Bachelor of Music in percussion performance from the University of Texas at Austin, Master of Music from Western Kentucky University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Oklahoma.
has performed as principal percussionist and timpanist with numerous symphony orchestras including the Symphony of the Americas, Fla., Gold Coast Opera/Symphony, Fla., Owensboro, KY., Symphony and section percussionist with the Florida Symphonic Pops
, Ballet Florida, and the Austin, Texas, Nashville, Tenn, and Oklahoma City Symphony Orchestras.
He was also percussionist for five summer seasons at Opryland USA, Tenn.
In addition, Alford has held membership and leadership positions in the Percussive Arts Society, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, Music Educators National Conference and the American Federation of Musicians.
He is a life member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.
Business experiences include managing a music store in Austin, Texas, working as a clinician/consultant for high school bands and orchestras throughout the southern United States, participating in the financial consultant training program at Merrill Lynch

, and three years with Warner Bros. Music Publishers
has written and published a number of articles, reviews, compositions and musical arrangements for percussion.
Alford was a member of the 2003 Florida Chancellor's Leadership Seminar class.
In 2011, he
successfully completed and graduated from an 18-month leadership program under the auspices of The Chair Academy
in association with the Wisconsin Leadership Development Institute
He is active in the Tampa Bay community and was re-appointed by the Board of County Commissioners for a second term to the Board of Directors for the Arts Council of Hillsborough County, where he has served as vice-chair and chair.
In December 2010, Alford became a founding member and was elected Chair of the Board of Directors of Hillsborough Arts, Inc.
In 2012 - 13, he served as a member of the Straz Center for the Performing Arts Board of Trustees.
enjoys attending cultural events, major league baseball games (Go Rays!), and is attempting to fulfill a childhood dream of building a model railroad (HO scale).
travel experiences include numerous trips to major U.S. cities to attend major league baseball games and to explore their unique regional and national historic attractions.
has also taken extended trips to Mexico, Spain, and Russia where he
reviewed educational programs, engaged in discussions with social and political dignitaries, and attended major visual and performing arts cultural events.
