Dr. Engel is a world-famous and extremely witty and entertaining speaker. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Dr. Engel now lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he has taught at the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and Duke University. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. While at UCLA he won that university's Outstanding Teacher Award.
Dr. Engel has written ten books published in England, Japan, and the United States.

Since 1980, Dr. Engel has been President of the Dickens Fellowship of North Carolina, the largest branch of this worldwide network of clubs. The sales of Dr. Engel's books, CDs, and DVDs have raised funds for The Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital which Dickens helped found in London in 1852.

Professor Engel continues to teach outside the classroom and give literary and historical programs throughout the world. He also presents assemblies at elementary, middle, and high schools, and his educational CDs are used in classrooms around the country. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, walking, and vacationing in exotic locations where he is not asked to deliver even one lecture.

Originally from Indianapolis, Engel earned his Master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he won the university's Outstanding Teacher Award.He now resides in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he has taught courses at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Duke University.
In addition for his scholarship and teaching, he has received North Carolina's Adult Education Award, North Carolina State's Distinguished Outreach Professorship, and the Victorian Society Award of Merit.
Presenting more than 200 lecture events covering more than 50 literary topics each year, Dr. Engel appears before a wide variety of audiences ranging from a thousand people at a Town Hall to a classroom of ten eager elementary students.Past audiences have included alumni groups, international conferences, educators associations, and - of course- library organizations.
As part of his prolific career, Dr. Engel has published seven literature-related books in England and in the United States.The most recent title, "A Dab of Dickens & A Touch of Twain," was released by Simon & Schuster in 2002 and is now in its second printing.
Professor Engel has also written three plays which have been produced in various venues, and PBS Television stations around the country have aired Professor Engel's mini-lecture series on his favorite author and literary hero, Charles Dickens.

In addition to his busy lecture schedule, during the past 26 years Engel has led thousands of travel enthusiasts to more than 20 countries for learning vacations focused on literary personages.
