GABLES PROFILE: JUDGE ELLEN SUE VENZEROur community is fortunate to have the County Judge Ellen Sue Venzer sitting for the preceding two and one-half years in the Coral Gables District Court.Judge Venzer served in the criminal division for over three years prior to her current assignment in the civil division.An early admission student at the University of Miami, Judge Venzer graduated the U.M. Law School in 1987 and worked in the private sector for over five years.She
then opened her
own firm representing financial institutions.Six years ago, she
successfully ran for county court judge, launching her
active judicial career.While serving in the criminal division, Judge Venzer created the innovative "Courtrooms in Classrooms" program, which brings local high school students to court to observe her imposing sentences on convicted DUI offenders.
The effect is obvious on the students who witness the guilty face fines and imprisonment, particularly if the offender is a peer of the students.Judge Venzer's
project has now gained national interest, and she
travels the country educating other courts on how to implement her
"Classrooms" program, Judge Venzer
has appeared on national televison, and will attend the National Judicial
College in Reno, Nevada this November to lecture on her
program and to participate in a national diversity panel.She
will also participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's
"Courage to Live" Conference in October.Her
step-father, retired chief judge of the Family Division, the Hon. Richard Yale Feder
, served as a role model for her
career, Judge Venzer
embodies the precepts her
family instilled in her
believes that civic participation requires doing more than that which merely promotes the self."We have a basic responsibility to be not only a productive part of our communities, but to also encourage others to do the same," the judge said.
