Ellen grew up in Tucson, Arizona in a bilingual household. She spent much of her time in Mexico with her mother's family, and says being bilingual has helped her tremendously on the job in the large Hispanic communities of Phoenix and Los Angeles. Ellen graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in broadcast journalism and is proud to have been inducted into the Walter Cronkite School of Broadcast Journalism's Hall of Fame in 2006. She has received an Impact Award for Excellence in Television from the National Hispanic Media Coalition. Ellen is not an empty-nester though -- she lives with her adopted rescue dog, Charli. Charli has brought Ellen so much joy that she now champions with "Wags and Walks" to help rescue other dogs and find them forever homes. Ellen Leyva is the co-anchor for ABC7 Eyewitness News at 4pm and 6pm.
Ellen grew up in Tucson, Arizona in a bilingual household. She spent much of her time in Mexico with her mother's family. She says that being bilingual has helped her tremendously on the job in the large Hispanic communities of Phoenix and Los Angeles. She graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, Ellen began her career as an intern at the CBS network. She was on the air reporting within six months. She moved from Arizona to Sacramento, California to work as a weekend anchor and reporter at KOVR. She moved to Los Angeles to anchor the evening news on KCOP. She joined ABC7 in 1995 and has been our health reporter, mid-day co-anchor and co-anchor of our early morning newscasts with her current co-anchor David Ono. Ellen is proud to have been inducted into the Walter Cronkite School of Broadcast Journalism's Hall of Fame in 2006. She has received an Impact Award for Excellence in Television from the National Hispanic Media Coalition.
