A shocked Bolger called Elizabeth Wainstein, president of the Potomack Company, the auction house where the painting was to be sold, who immediately agreed to stop the sale.
Elizabeth Wainstein questions whether Saidie was even the technical owner of the painting, since according to the Bernheim-Jeune gallery's records it was sold to Herbert L. May, not his wife.

Simultaneous with the promotion of the February 6 sale, Elizabeth Haynie Wainstein, owner of The Potomack Company, announced that the company is expanding its geographical presence and refining its focus.
With respect to the company's focus, Wainstein announced the appointment of Kathryn Coldiron as head of the firm's newly expanded books, manuscripts, and memorabilia department.

Speaking after the sale, Elizabeth Wainstein, Potomack's owner, expressed her delight in the overall success of the sale, especially in what she termed the "solid interest" shown for higher-end European and American furniture and fine art.
She noted that many of the individuals who had previously been strong buyers in the Chinese market were noticeably active in those other areas.
