"(James) Collingwood built the office building where the marquee is in 1864," said Elizabeth Tartaglia, director of the Bardavon's network administration and archives. "His coal and lumber yard was behind that building and there was an archway in the building where horse-drawn carriages would go through and under it to the yards in the back."

That archway was subsequently transformed into a lobby when the opera house was built.
While today's Bardavon seats 944, in the late 19th century the venue sat 2,000 on three levels, the highest known as the "peanut gallery. "When it started to be used for movies, it was scaled down for better acoustics," Tartaglia said.
