Judge Elizabeth Ehrlich

I was writing a story that ran in May 2004 about how the late Berks Judge Elizabeth Ehrlich was offering to let deadbeat dads out of jail if they would only get a vasectomy.

Berks County Senior Judge Elizabeth Ehrlich isn't afraid to bring up the v-word in her courtroom. She said she has suggested vasectomy, the male sterilization procedure, to fathers hopelessly behind in child support. Ehrlich said she feels the pain of judges who come up with radical approaches to the growing problem of unsupported children. But, she quickly adds, she would never make it part of a court order. "I think it (voluntary sterilization) is appropriate for certain people who continue to have children who they have no intention of providing for financially or in any other way," Ehrlich said. Ehrlich, former chief of family court, said she asks delinquent fathers if they have considered a vasectomy to make sure that they have considered the procedure as a way out from under more child support debt. "I certainly make it clear that it would affect my opinion as to their truthfulness when they came into court," she said. Ehrlich said judges struggle for solutions to the endless parade of delinquent parents and neglected children. "The argument is that people have a right to procreate," Ehrlich said.
