As the Chief of Protocol for the Mayor of Los Angeles, Elga Sharpe oversees the relationships between the City of Los Angeles and foreign governments.
has in-depth knowledge of world affairs and regularly communicates up-to-date information on international politics to the Mayor, prior to official meetings with foreign dignitaries.
She also acts as the main liaison with the twenty five Sister Cities of Los Angeles and with the third largest Consular Corps in the world after New York City and Hong Kong.
She is an expert in the rules of protocol, diplomatic etiquette, official formality, event planning, and the recognized system of international courtesy.
is the City's primary contact with the U.S. Department of State, Diplomatic Security Service, U.S. Secret Service Protection Operations, the Dignitary Protection Unit
at Los Angeles
International World Airport Police Department and the Los Angeles Police Department
Mrs. Sharpe conducts high-profile briefings and staffs the Mayor for diplomatic visits, including U.N. Secretaries General and numerous Heads of States (Royalty, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers, Ambassadors, Governors, and Mayors).
Mrs. Sharpe also plans, schedules and acts as an Advance Liaison for Mayor Villaraigosa's trade missions in Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and the Far East.
The countries that were visited as part of trade missions for both Mayor Hahn and Mayor Villaraigosa
include: South Africa, Iceland, Mexico, Israel, Germany, United Kingdom, Denmark (COP 15 Climate Change Conference), China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.
Mrs. Sharpe also serves as liaison between the Mayor and the Hollywood film industry.
On two occasions she
facilitated the U.N. Secretary General's
mission to promote the UN Community Outreach Initiative with the entertainment industry; planned and oversaw the Academy Awards Nominees Night 2010 and 2011; and regularly organizes guided tours for high-level foreign officials at Sony Studios
in Culver City.
rs. Sharpe has extensive corporate and non-profit international background.
Prior to her engagement as Chief of Protocol, Mrs. Sharpe was a consultant to SHOAH, the USC Foundation Institute to overcome prejudice, intolerance, and bigotry through the educational use of the Institute's visual history testimonies.
She also worked as the Head of Translation/Adaptation Department at DreamWorks SKG and as the Director of Language Resources at Warner Bros., International Channels.
Prior to working for the film industry, Mrs. Sharpe worked for the 1994 World Cup USA as the Director of Language Services and Protocol and served in several capacities at Air Canada, including In-Flight Service in Canada and Human Resources in Los Angeles.
She was also employed by the Consulate General of Belgium in Toronto, Canada as a multi-lingual trade coordinator, where she played a vital role during the visit of the late King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola to Canada.Mrs.
Sharpe was born in Aruba and studied in Aruba, Suriname, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
