Edward T. Buckley said goodbye in a May 22 retirement ceremony in front of the headquarters building , as friends , family and colleagues gathered.It's difficult to say goodbye after all these years , Buckley said.The Army has been great to both me and my family..Buckley was appointed as the deputy commanding general of 7th ID Aug. 4.Before that , Buckley served in a variety of command and staff assignments.He commanded 2nd Brigade , 7th Infantry , Fort Ord , Calif ; served as commander and aide-de-camp , 8th Infantry Division in Germany ; commander , 1st Battalion , 13th Infantry , 8th Infantry Division , Germany ; rifle platoon and scout platoon leader in the 8th Infantry ; assistant G-1 , 2nd Infantry Division , Korea ; assistant professor of military science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ; S-3 and battalion executive officer for 2nd Battalion , 16th Infantry , 1st Infantry Division , Fort Riley , Kan. ; deputy director , J-5 , Headquarters , Forces Command ; deputy director , J-3 , Headquarters , United States Atlantic Command , Norfolk Va. ; executive officer to the commanding general , Training and Doctrine Command , Fort Monroe , Va. ; assistant division commander , 7th Infantry Division ; deputy commanding general , 5th United States Army ( Central ) , Fort Sam Houston , Texas ; and most recently , the assistant chief of staff for operations , Kosovo Forces , Pristina , Kosovo.Buckley's military education includes the Airborne , Ranger , Infantry Officer Basic Course , Infantry Officer Advanced Course , Army Staff College , British Defense War College and United States Army War College.Buckley said upon his retirement , he and his wife Vicki , plan to stay in the Colorado Springs area.He said the reason for staying here is the community itself.You hear everyone say it as they get ready to leave a post , Buckley said.But without a doubt , the relationship between Fort Carson and the local community is better than any other post..During his 31 years of service , Buckley earned the Defense Superior Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster , Legion of Merit with four Oak Leaf Clusters , Defense Meritorious Service Medal , Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters , Joint Service Commendation Medal , Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster , Army Achievement Medal , Kosovo Campaign Medal , Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal , NATO Service Medal , German Honor Cross in Gold , the Ranger tab , Expert Infantryman's Badge and the Parachutist's Badge.

He died 30th September 1917 aged 30 when he was shot in the head and instantly killed by a machine gun when observing a barbed wiring party at 4 in the morning. He joined up in October, 1914, and was at the front before the year was out. At one time he and four brothers were all in Khaki. He was wounded at Hooge and was invalided home in September, 1915 and his name was mentioned in the New Year despatches. Then, with the greatest difficulty and against all medical advice, he obtained permission to go out a second time. This was in July, 1917. Two months later he was reported dead. The Cuthbertian, December 1917, p92 He is buried at Loos British Cemetery, France, grave reference XX. F. 5.
