Born in England in 1921, Edward Michael
childhood and adolescence in various countries in the Middle East but found himself in London when, aged 18, war broke out in.
enrolled in the R.A.F as ground personnel.
Noticing the interest that the young man showed in music, the wife of a military chaplain taught him the basics of composition, and barely two years later, he
entered one of his
works in a contest in London.
won, enabling him to hear the work, a scherzo for orchestra ("Dyonisies"), performed in the Albert Hall by the London Philharmonic Orchestra - conducted by John Hollingsworth.
After the war, he
enrolled in the Guildhall School of Music
quickly obtained a first prize in composition and a second one for orchestral direction.
