Edna McMillan, professor of art at Cameron University, began the two camps 30 years ago, and they are still going strong.
The camps are a collaboration of Very Special Arts of Oklahoma and Cameron University Department of Arts, which includes theater, music and art, McMillan said. "We have a class called the Creative Expressions Class, where students are 6-12 years of age, and the Summer Arts Institute, which is for 13-18 year olds," she said. "We used to have highly developed programs in elementary schools years ago, but those aren't in existence much anymore. We are trying to provide summer enrichment to the students." The programs hire advanced art students and art alumni to teach the classes. McMillan was a classroom teacher in Louisiana for many years before coming to Cameron University.
