Edna Gulley was born and raised in the coal-camp of Clinchco, Virginia, where, for sixteen years she helped to run a pre-school for low-income children in Dickenson County. For the last ten years, Gulley has worked with the Appalachian Women's Alliance, serving as a powerful advocate for the economic and human rights of people of color, poor people, and women and children. She is particularly proud of her efforts to empower and motivate other people in her community "all the way from registering to vote to running for office.
