Ed Zapke, South Charlotte County Coalition Board Appointee The South Charlotte County Coalition is a coalition of property owner associations from the Peace River southward, formed in 2003. Its mission is to enable, enhance and improve the quality of life for the residents of south Charlotte County. When the coalition was formed, it identified items of interest which included beautification, water management, traffic, evacuation, green space, emergency services and taxes among others. Ed Zapke was the President from 2005 to 2007 and is the representative for the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association. Ed provides monthly reports to the PGICA board and is granted authorization to speak on behalf of the association when appropriate.
Ed and his wife Maureen moved to Punta Gorda in 1999 after a 30 year career teaching secondary mathematics for grades 7 through 12 in New York. While teaching, Ed was moderator and advisor to several clubs and activities. He coached football, swimming and baseball and umpired baseball. During the summer breaks, he sailed extensively in New England. His sailing experience includes both cruising and racing. He also had the opportunity to sail the bi-annual Marion (MA) to Bermuda race.
Ed held numerous professional positions during his career in New York. He served as the Secondary Mathematics Program Chairperson and was a consultant to the New York State Education Department, Mathematics Bureau. Ed's academic career includes a B.S. from Mount St. Mary's University in Maryland, an M.S. from Adelphi University in New York, a P.D. from Long Island University in New York, and post graduate work at the State University of New York.

"I'm still reacting to it," said ... [cached]

"I'm still reacting to it," said Ed Zapke, president of the South Charlotte County Coalition, in which Duffy was active.

Zapke remembered that Duffy employed any means necessary to demonstrate his point, like his thoughts on how wide a proposed sidewalk should be along Aqui Esta.
"Brian used to carry around a cardboard sidewalk to show people how ridiculous an 8-foot sidewalk would be," Zapke said.
