Ed Kaihatsu was a NCAA Fencer at the University of Illinois from 1981-1983.
Now he teaches as Associate Head Coach at Northwestern University. One transcendant moment of sportsmanship between athletic "enemies" changed Ed's life. Now, through Ed's story, that moment changes the daily lives of the fencers he coaches. This is awesome Ed!

It will make the best, well-rounded fencer rise to be the champion," says Ed Kaihatsu, a coach at Northwestern University.Recruits are always teaching me more about what they want and are looking for in a University and its fencing program," says Kaihatsu. He thinks that the recruiting process is constantly evolving and meeting the young prospects keeps him on top of what's important to the recruits. For Kaihatsu, the most negative aspect of recruiting is when he runs across a prospect who knows everything" or has a bad attitude towards others. It makes me sad to think a young mind is already so closed it can't accept any new ideas from others."It also makes Kaihatsu unhappy to see a young person who can't get along with their peers. He used to think that European fencers were stronger than Americans.
