Ed Hartin
Ed Hartin, MS, EFO, MIFireE, CFO is the principal and chief instructor with CFBT-US. Ed has 39 years of fire service operations and training experience and serves as the Fire Chief with Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue. Ed has delivered fire behavior training and seminar presentations throughout the United States as well as internationally in Australia, Malaysia, Germany, Croatia, England, Sweden, Canada, Chile, & Peru. He is also a regular contributor to fire service publications including Crisis Respons Journal, Fire & Rescue, Firehouse.com, and is a contributing Editor for Fire Rescue magazine. Along with Paul Grimwood, Shan Raffel, and John McDonough, Ed was a co-author of 3D Firefighting: Training, Techniques, and Tactics published by Fire Protection Publications in 2005). Ed also contributed to the development of the fire behavior chapters in the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) Essentials of Firefighting (5th and 6th ed.), Hazardous Materials for First Responders (3rd and 4th ed.) and Fireground Support Operations (2nd ed).

About Ed Hartin At a formal dinner on 23 January 2010, Chief Ed Hartin was recognized as an honorary member of Company 1 Germania of the Valdivia, Chile Fire Department. In addition, he was awarded a commendation for supporting the ongoing professional development of the members of Company 1 Germania of the Valdivia, Chile Fire Department and encouraging them in their efforts to share their knowledge with Chiles fire service. On 24-27 January 2007, the Company 1 Germania of the Valdivia, Chile Fire Department hosted the first international fire service congress to be held in South America. Participants included over 150 firefighters and officers from Chile, Peru, Argentina, and the United States. The congress provided an opportunity to participate in both classroom and hands-on workshops on a wide range of fire service topics including fire behavior, ventilation, search, rapid intervention, technical rescue, and extrication. While topical areas were diverse, the congress had a substantive emphasis on compartment fire behavior with lectures presented by CFBT-US Chief Instructor Ed Hartin and Geraldo Crespo of Contraincendio in Buenos Aires, Argentina and practical training sessions conducted by Ed Hartin and Juan Esteban Kunstmann of the Valdivia Company 1 Germania. While topical areas were diverse, the congress had a substantive emphasis on compartment fire behavior with lectures presented by CFBT-US Chief Instructor Ed Hartin and Geraldo Crespo of Contraincendio in Buenos Aires, Argentina and practical training sessions conducted by Ed Hartin and Juan Esteban Kunstmann of the Valdivia Company 1 Germania. Movement of air towards the fire and movement of hot, buoyant combustion products out of the compartment or structure (Grimwood, Hartin, McDonough, & Raffel, 2005). Gas cooling results in lower hot gas layer temperatures (reducing radiant heat flux) and adds thermal ballast to slow reheating of the gases and reduce potential for ignition of the gases overhead (Grimwood, Hartin, Raffel, McDonough, 2005) Ignition of accumulated unburned pyrolysis products and flammable products of incomplete combustion existing in or transported into a flammable state (Grimwood, Hartin, McDonough, & Raffel, 2005)

British Columbia Training Officers Association CFBT-US Chief Instructor Ed Hartin delivered two presentations of 12-Minutes on the Fireground at the association's annual conference in Maple Ridge, BC on May 26, 2009. This presentation examined extreme fire behavior using three firefighter line-of-duty death case studies. Institution of Fire Engineers-Australia CFBT-US Chief Instructor Ed Hartin delivered presentations titled How Much Science is Necessary: Training and Educating Firefighters in the 21st Century, Extreme Fire Behavior: Understanding the Hazard at the 2009 International Firefighting Safety Conference held in Sydney, Australia on April 29 through May 1 and Perth, Australia on May 4-5, 2009. South Alberta Firefighters Conference CFBT-US Chief Instructor Ed Hartin and Instructor Trainer Matt Leech deliveredCFBT Level I as a pre-conference workshop at the 2008 Annual Conference in Lethbridge, Alberta on October 23-24, 2008.
