Futa led a diverse and educated staff of more than 650 at Rotary's World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA and international offices in Sao Paula, Brazil; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Zurich, Switzerland; Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, Korea; New Delhi, India; and Parramatta (Sydney), Australia. More than one-quarter of Rotary's staff was born outside the United States - from more than 40 countries. Another quarter has lived in another country for six months or more - in more than 70 countries. More than half speak a language other than English well enough to carry on a conversation. Nearly 40 languages are spoken at Rotary's World Headquarters. Some 85 percent of staff has bachelor's degrees and 23 percent have one or more master's degrees. Ed has been in the position of Rotary's General Secretary for 12 years (1999-2011), making him the 3rd longest serving GS in our history.

Futa comes from Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was president of an international marketing consulting firm. He has served on the Board of Governors of the YMCA and as a mediator in the Neighborhood Justice Center of Honolulu. He is a keynote speaker at many Rotary International events including club and district conferences and international assemblies and conventions.
Ed's other recent Rotary projects are: - The General Chair for the 2013 Lisbon Convention. - He also served as the vice chair for the Rotary international peace forums conducted in Berlin, Honolulu, and Hiroshima during the 2012-13 Rotary year. - During the 2012-3 Rotary year Ed served as a special adviser to Pres. Tanaka. - He is one of the five representative of Rotary International to the United Nations in New York City.
- Presently, he is the Dean of the Rotary International Representative Corps. This corps includes all RI appointed representatives to the following: The United Nations, New York City; UNOG (United Nations Office In Geneva; UNOV (United Nations Office Vienna; ECLAC (UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Santiago, Chile); ESCWA (UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, Beirut, Lebanon); ESCAP (UN Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok, Thailand; UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Paris, France); OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Paris, France); Council of Europe, Strasbourg, France); AU (African Union, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia); ECA (Economic Commission for Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia); UN-HABITAT, Nairobi, Kenya; UNEP (UN Environment Programme, Nairobi, Kenya); WFP (World Food Program, Rome, Italy); FAO (Food & Agriculture Organization, Rome, Itsly); IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development, Rome, Italy); World Bank, Washington DC; OAS (Organization of American States, Washington, DC); European Union, Brussels, Belgium; Commonwealth of Nations, London, England; League of Arab States, Cairo, Egypt. - He is a member of the Arch C.
