Dr. Earl Fredrick Miller, Sr.Dr. Earl Fredrick Miller, Sr.It was in 1966 that Earl Miller began to experience a conscious inner-calling to the Gospel ministry.After trying very hard for three years to deny his calling, in June 1969 he surrendered to the Will of God and accepted his call to preach.In May 1972 after receiving his Master of Divinity Degree, Rev. Miller enrolled as a full time student in the Doctor of Ministry Program at Union Theological Seminary.In May 1974 Dr. Miller received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Union Theological Seminary.Dr. Miller accepted the call to pastor Pilgrim Baptist Church in June 1977 and immediately began to create miracles in organization and administration.Tremendous spiritual growth occurred under the leadership of Dr. Miller.Attendance in Bible Study, Sunday Church School, and other biblical studies reached an all-time high.Over 1700 new members joined Pilgrim in an eleven year period and brought the active membership from 500 in 1977 to 1650 in 1988.The church budget grew from $90,000 in 1977 to $400,000 in 1988.Under Dr. Miller's leadership, Pilgrim purchased the house and lot adjacent to the church parking lot; started plans to renovate Fellowship Hall, renovated 730 W. Central to house Pilgrim Academy; installed new roof, gutters, and storm windows; painted church inside and outside; purchased new sound system, audio tape duplicator, video camera, recorder and monitor; built new classroom / office space on 3rd floor; purchased computer and software designed for church use; purchased a new church van; installed $10,000 air conditioning unit for the sanctuary; purchased new choir robes.Dr. Miller served on the St. Paul Planning Commission and Minnesota Council of Churches.He also served as President of the following organizations : St. Paul Ministerial Alliance, Rainbo Children's Theatre, Pilgrim Foundation for Urban, Social and Educational Development, St. Paul NAACP, and the Minnesota State Baptist Convention, just to name a few.Dr. Miller played a lead role in the famous musical and play "Gospel at Colonus."Dr. Miller was named by the Minneapolis/St.Paul magazine as one of the 10 most influential clergy in the Twin Cities.In 1985, Dr. Miller was a recipient of the Spurgeon Award given by the Boy Scouts of America.In May 1992, Dr. Miller resigned as Senior Pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church.During Dr. Miller's pastorate, a controversy arose which divided the church.Dr. Miller and some of the membership left Pilgrim and started the current Progressive Baptist Church, St. Paul, MN.
