Earl Hishinuma, Ph.D. Earl Hishinuma, Ph.D. Hishinuma, Ph.D., is a Professor, Executive Associate Chair, and Associate Chair of Research for the Department of Psychiatry, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Dr. Hishinuma earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the Department of Psychology, University of Hawai'i at Manoa. He became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry in 1997, became an Associate Professor in 2001, became a Professor in 2005, and was tenured in 2008. Dr. Hishinuma is the Department of Psychiatry's Department Personnel Committee (DPC) Chair. As the Associate Chair of Research and as the Research Council Chair, Dr. Hishinuma has overseen over $25 million in extramural research, including funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since the establishment of the Research Work Group, and subsequently, the Research Division within the Department of Psychiatry in 2001, there have been over 240 publications (i.e., peer-reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters) by residents and faculty. Dr. Hishinuma is the former Principal Investigator for the Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center and for the Coordinating Center for the National Academic Centers on Youth Violence Prevention (ACEs) funded by CDC. He has also been a Research Investigator for the Pacific People's Mental Health Research Support Program (PPMHRSP) funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He is currently a Research Investigator for the National Center on Indigenous Hawaiian Behavioral Health (NCIHBH). Dr. Hishinuma has published over 70 scientific peer-reviewed journal articles and served as the Senior Guest Editor for a special journal issue on Native Hawaiian health. He has served on the Editorial Board of the Pacific Educational Research Journal, and as ad hoc peer reviewer for numerous major journals, including the American Journal of Public Health, Alcoholism, International Journal of Testing, and Exceptional Children. e tutors medical students using problem-based learning and is an active participant in Psychiatry Journal Clubs. Dr. Hishinuma's applied experience includes having been the Acting Headmaster and High School Principal for a private K-12 school for students who are learning disabled and/or gifted/talented. In addition to these administrative responsibilities, he also served as a teacher and psychoeducational diagnostician. He also served as a psychological examiner in the Department of Education, State of Hawai'i. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly (UHPA)-the faculty union of the University of Hawai'i.
