"When the size of the deer herd is reduced to a level that the quantity and variety of park vegetation can adequately support , the park ecosystem begins to recover," said Park Superintendent Dwight Anttila.

"We don't want to eliminate the deer," Park Superintendent Dwight Anttila said."They are a beautiful addition to the park and an integral park of the ecosystem. But we need to keep the numbers in check to prevent them from destroying the vegetation, reducing the biodiversity, transporting the tick that bears Lyme disease and colliding with cars."

The deer have no natural predators in Delaware.
"When they are hungry, they eat pretty much anything from saplings and tree limbs to tasty ornamental shrubs," Anttila said.
Delaware's white-tail deer population has thrived and grown in the past thirty years.Even with hunting, the population is still considered robust.

More than 1,000 people can be found sledding at Brandywine Creek State Park the day after a snowstorm, said park superintendent Dwight Anttila.

"We usually get [the park's] roads and lots open within 12 hours after a snowstorm," Anttila said.
Just as important as the sledding location is making sure children are dressed appropriately for the season.Besides wearing cold-weather clothing, they should be well-covered in case they take a tumble off their sled.
A heavy, snug coat, a good pair of boots, a hat and gloves will not only keep you warm but help keep snow away from fingers and toes.
Parents, however, should be careful to avoid bundling up a child too tightly, or he or she won't be able to move easily enough to enjoy the snow.
