Dunn M. Beckett, the former prison guard convicted last year of possessing a sawed-off shotgun, has begun serving a 33-month federal prison sentence. Beckett had worked as a guard at the Donald W. Wyatt Federal Detention Center in Central Falls for eight years, and had served as president of the Rhode Island Private Correctional Officers' Union. PROVIDENCE -- Dunn M. Beckett , a former federal corrections officer at the George W. Wyatt Detention Center , was indicted by a federal grand jury yesterday for possessing a shotgun shorter than the legal length.
Federal agents say they found a sawed-off shotgun in the garage of Beckett's home last month when executing a search warrant in connection with an unspecified murder investigation.

The indictment alleges that on Aug. 16 , Beckett -- who is also known as Dunn Girard -- had a Remington 12-gauge shotgun that had been cut down to 25 inches long with a 141/4-inch barrel.Federal law prohibits shotguns shorter than 26 inches overall or with barrels shorter than 18 inches.
The indictment follows a federal complaint that was lodged last month against Beckett , 33 , of 58 Edgewood Drive in Cumberland.He was arrested on Aug. 31 at the Wyatt Center , where he had been working , and is free on bond.
