...PROVIDENCE -- Dunn M. Beckett , a corrections officer at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Center , in Central Falls , was identified by a federal prosecutor as a suspect or target of two murder investigations during his appearance yesterday in U.S. District Court on federal firearms charges
--the president of the 57-member Rhode Island Private Correctional Officers' Union
-- has been charged with possession of a shotgun shorter than the legal length and possession of a stolen firearm.

wore ankle chains.
During the proceedings , Asst. U.S. Attorney Gerard B. Sullivan stated that Beckett
has been aware for some time that he
is a suspect or target in the two unspecified homicide investigations.Beckett
was arrested on the state steroid possession charge while on duty Thursday at the Wyatt Detention Facility. He
has since been suspended from his
job , the judge said.
minutes-long arraignment in District Court , he
was then charged with the federal firearms possession.
Until then , Martin said , Beckett
would not be released.
The prosecutor also noted that Beckett
had been terminated from his
job ( The judge said he
had been suspended ) , and has a history of anabolic steroid use..
But the judge also weighed the argument by Beckett's lawyer , John M. Verdecchia , who said Sullivan's recommendation would mean a jail sentence for his
client , since Beckett
could not afford to post that amount.
Verdecchia said Beckett
was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps , and had worked at the Wyatt center for more than seven years.
