In 1974, Higgins graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and then moved back to Lexington.In 1984, the year
he exhibited at the
Siegel Gallery he moved to New York.In 1985,
he was included in "The Classic Tradition" a group show at
The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield Connecticut.

Higgins has exhibited
his work in Italy and Germany as well as California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Virginia and in Florida including the
John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota.
Higgins received his BFA and his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.He is on the faculty of the Department of Graphic and Interactive Communication at the Ringling School of Art & Design since 1991.He has also taught as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Graphic Design at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg.In 1998,
he received a fellowship to study the letter form structures of early Greek inscriptions at the
Epigraphic Museum and
Agora Museum in Athens.
He is represented exclusively by
Greene Contemporary in Sarasota, Florida.
