Silliman also spoke about his experience during that time. "I was not in the war, but my wife's father was. A couple of times, his convoy got lost in storms. Fortunately, less than two months later, he and his unit returned home safely, but 286 other Americans and many more Kuwaitis never returned home," he said.
Important part He also challenged the attendees to learn how this important part of history of both nations affected their city, neighborhood, family and beloved ones. "Ask your mom, your dad, uncles, aunts, grandparents, neighbors and yes, even your professors, about their experiences during the occupation and liberation. I think you'll find it an enriching and personally fulfilling assignment that will teach you a lot about your country today. They may, like several of my friends, recall their joy at seeing Kuwaiti soldiers and US Marines raise the Kuwaiti flag over the airport when it was secured after a bloody battle," said Silliman. "I'm not surprised by how this shared experience - this trial by fire - cemented the friendship between the two countries and deepened the cultural, political, social and economic ties that are the foundation of our relationship today," he concluded
