Those honored were Paul Lints of Sappington, Mo., Shelly Dohogne of Scott City, Mo., Douglas McDaniel of Jackson, Mo., John Bry of Urbana, Ill., Brian Joos of Sherwood, Ark., and Anthony Jansen of Leopold, Mo. McDaniel, a trooper with the Missouri Highway Patrol, was recognized by the College of Health and Human Services. A native of Crystal City, Mo., he received a bachelor's in criminal justice in 1992. McDaniel teaches annual courses for new recruits and spouses at the Missouri State Highway Patrol Academy and substitute teaches at area schools.He was named the 1997 Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper of the Year.He is a member of the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.

Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper Doug McDaniel said in light of recent events he felt the need to give blood.As a trooper he already had a healthy respect for the role donated blood plays in everyday lives. "I do a lot of blood relays," McDaniel said. When hospitals need blood immediately, it falls to state troopers to race with the blood between stations.Using lights and sirens, the troopers are able to get the blood to different hospitals at top speeds. Troopers also have transported human corneas, but those situations are usually not emergencies, he said. At one time, the Red Cross' goal was to always keep at least a three-day supply of blood on hand.

Hitt was arrested July 13, 2002, after his van was stopped by trooper Douglas McDaniel of the Missouri State Highway Patrol because it did not have lights on an attached trailer. McDaniel found the package and discovered it was a full and complete meth lab.He then found in the back of the van a battery-powered lighting system.
