Doug Keylon, principal at Rhea Central Elementary School said, "We're struggling with students not coming to school and even if it is the parent's fault we are held responsible by No Child Left Behind for them being absent.
What we want to do is look at students who have a history of truancy and target them specifically."
According to Keylon
, last year 250 students at Rhea Central Elementary School
missed more than 12 days of school. This year, those students will be given a letter to take home to parents that explains the seriousness of truancy, Keylon
said. Rhea Central
has also established an attendance board, made up of school staff and a representative from McKenzie's office.Truant children and parents can come to the board, where "we will see if there is any way we can assist them," said Keylon
