Doug Keylon, principal at Rhea Central Elementary School said, "We're struggling with students not coming to school and even if it is the parent's fault we are held responsible by No Child Left Behind for them being absent. What we want to do is look at students who have a history of truancy and target them specifically." According to Keylon, last year 250 students at Rhea Central Elementary School missed more than 12 days of school. This year, those students will be given a letter to take home to parents that explains the seriousness of truancy, Keylon said. Rhea Central has also established an attendance board, made up of school staff and a representative from McKenzie's office.Truant children and parents can come to the board, where "we will see if there is any way we can assist them," said Keylon.

Those were the words Rhea Central Elementary School Head Coach Doug Keylon used to describe his girls' basketball team after they won the Sequatchie Valley Conference tournament Saturday afternoon. The 22-4 Lady Yellow Jackets defeated Van Buren Middle School 38-31 in the title game to secure their second straight SVC championship. "We've won all our games the last stretch because of our defensive pressure. It starts there," Keylon said. "We did a good job changing up the defense and giving good looks," Keylon said. "This is a great group of girls, most of whom started playing together in the fifth-grade for Kim Dotson," Keylon added.
