"Parents shouldn't wait until their child is a teenager or in their last year of high school," says Doreen Byrd, parent educator with Exceptional Children's Assistance Center in Davidson.
"In some cases, young people I know are perfectly capable of doing laundry or shampooing their own hair, and the parents are doing these things for them," says Byrd

The evening offers parents a chance to attend one of three 90-minute sessions:* "Becoming Your Child's Best and Most Effective Advocate" presented by Judi Archer, parent educator at the Exceptional Children's Assistance Center.* "Planning for Transition From the School to the Adult World" presented by Doreen Byrd, parent educator at the Exceptional Children's Assistance Center.* "Understanding the Referral Process and Eligibility Determination for Special Education" presented by Kate Neale, Department of Public Instruction and Al Soulier, school psychologist.Child care for elementary school-age children will be provided for parents who pre-register by Friday.
