Gospel singer Donny Richmond continues European chart-topping success News@theknoxvillejournal.com
Gospel singer Donny Richmond, whose music resume includes awards in the U.S. for Country Gospel Music Artist of the Decade and Entertainer of the Decade, has experienced an expanded outreach with many chart hit recordings throughout Europe.
Richmond, music minister of Henderson Chapel Baptist Church, has broken a European Christian Chart record with his recent single, "Gospel Jukebox."
...
"Gospel Jukebox" was written by Irishman Walter Cunningham, who composed all of the songs on Richmond's new album, "Love To Ireland. Richmond toured Ireland in October of last year, doing national TV, radio and concerts, while taking a two-week sabbatical from his music minister position.
Richmond recorded "Gospel Jukebox" last September in the Pigeon Forge studio of Junior Mercer, who engineered the session.
...
Mercer had previously worked with Richmond at the Classic Country and American Jukebox Theaters.
...
Some are likening the European success of "Gospel Jukebox" to the American success of Richmond's duet recording, "Jesus Is My Lifeline," with country music legend Stonewall Jackson.
Released in 1996, the song holds the all-time record for No. 1 longevity on the Music City News and Gospel Voice Magazine charts, at four consecutive months. Richmond and Jackson received many awards, including the Legendary Achievement Award, presented onstage at the Grand Ole Opry. The song also went No. 1 in Europe 10 years later.
Richmond is slated to make further appearances in Europe this year.
"I won't be gone long," he said in a press release. "I like to stay near my family and Henderson Chapel as much as possible."
Meanwhile, Richmond and Henderson Chapel Baptist Church plan to take part in the Annual Dolly Parade again this year in Pigeon Forge, for the third time. Last year, as a multiple award winner himself, Richmond was selected by the Country Gospel Music Association to induct Dolly Parton into the Country Gospel Hall Of Fame.
...
"Some of our church members are kin to her," Richmond said. "We all know this town owes so much to her. Both of my sons look forward each month to receiving the books her foundation sends to all the kids.
"Last year, Dolly wrote a note in our youngest son's school yearbook," Richmond continued.

...
Richmond's acknowledged the inclusion of gospel music at Dollywood, since its inception. Also cited was Parton's current gospel release; "Letter to Heaven: Songs of Faith And Inspiration," a compilation of the songs released over her career. Her aunt Dorothy Jo Owens was co-writer with her on several of these songs, and also recorded a gospel TV special with Richmond in the late 1990s.

~ DON RICHMOND ~
DON RICHMOND is a Country Music Entertainer whose vast audience appeal and versatility in his music, and whose dedication to his faith and values, is now affecting pop culture internationally. DONNY RICHMOND is the current Country Gospel Music Association ARTIST OF THE DECADE and the International Country Gospel Music Association ENTERTAINER OF THE DECADE. In fact, entertaining has been a way of life for Donny since he was a child. His winning smile, pleasing personality and healthy appearance helped Donny win a contest to pose for a milk advertisement when he was a baby.
Donny was just four years old when he began singing for the neighbors around the kids' swings in the backyard. In the second grade, if it rained and the class couldn't go outdoors for recess, the teacher would call on Donny to sing.
Richmond grew up in the suburbs of Maryland just outside of Washington, D.C. In Junior and Senior High School, he became interested in writing songs and wearing "dude" clothes; and would entertain his classmates. Donny sang at his own Senior Prom, wearing an "outlandish gold outfit, including gold sparkle shoes. After high school and while appearing with bands at night, Donny attended college by day, studying music and acting.
In 1992, while visiting Nashville, Richmond was invited to appear on a special recording project with Stonewall Jackson, featuring many of the all-time top country music artists. Donny found himself in the recording studio alongside Garth Brooks.
...
Richmond moved to Nashville in 1993, and since that time has gone on to make history by charting both on the mainstream Country Music Charts and Christian/Country Gospel Charts simultaneously.
While having many National #1 Country Gospel songs and winning a host of Music Association Awards, Richmond has also clocked up an extremely impressive list of television appearances, including his own "The Don Richmond Show," which had its beginnings in September 1997 for the Christian Television Network in Nashville, Tennessee, and has been viewed by millions in the 9 years since.
In 2001, Donny Richmond's Christmas video, "Heartbreak Holiday," was a smashing hit on American National Country Music Television Networks, including Great American Country (GAC) and VH-1. It has continued to receive airplay each Christmas season, and is now regarded by many as a classic. "Heartbreak Holiday" also led to the Christmas 2005 short feature film of the same name and starring Richmond, which drew rave reviews on American television. Donny has also been featured in Europe on Revelation TV.
It is said that the best way to get to know the genuine warmth and sincerity of Donny Richmond is in his concerts. The wonderful response from European television audiences via Revelation TV has inspired Donny to release more material here, and he is even expressing interest in doing a European tour soon.
As of July 2006, Donny Richmond has three songs simultaneously charting high internationally throughout Europe; "Jesus is My Lifeline," which recently went #1 on both the Euro Christian and Euro Country Gospel Charts, "He Did It Because," currently ranking on the same chart, and "Next Times," which is climbing the European Country Music Charts, currently in Top 20 status.
