Rev. Donnley Dutcher of St. John United Church of Christ poses with the national award given to the Freeport Church for "Justice Issues" on Thursday, July 18, 2013, in Freeport.
The award, which is given every other year, was presented to Dutcher at the convention held June 28, 2013, in Long Beach, Calif. Dutcher picked up the award at the national convention for the General Synod XXVIIII in Long Beach, Calif. He said he was proud to accept the award, which is given every other year to one United Church of Christ church that "brings the healing love of Christ to their community for the glory of God." "For the church, I am both humbled and honored to have received this recognition," Dutcher said. "I know other churches in larger cities seem to be doing more ground breaking and in the trenches for social justice, but for me, it's all about the ministry, a matter of context to the Freeport community, which is conservative in nature. ... I see this as an award to raise consciousness." Dutcher said he is proud of his congregation for showing the courage to express the openness and love and tolerance to welcome all people to worship. "As I pastor, I just feel it is right to be in the forefront. It's about doing unto others as you would have others do unto you," he said.
