Company President Donna Leger speaks at the Central States Manufacturing groundbreaking in Hartford.

Arkansas-based Central States Manufacturing, a manufacturer and distributor of metal building products, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction for its operations in Hartford. The company is building a 40,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on a 10-acre plot, creating up to 40 jobs in the next three years.
"The decision to open our sixth manufacturing plant in Hartford, SD was influenced by the agricultural focus in the region, as well as its recent and projected growth," said Donna Leger, President of Central States Manufacturing.  "We feel that Hartford's proactive business stance, strong desire for growth, and community values combined with its easy access to not only major freeways but also a larger metropolitan area such as Sioux Falls are the perfect environment for the location of a Central States facility."

"The decision to open our sixth manufacturing plant in Hartford, S.D., was influenced by the agricultural focus in the region, as well as its recent and projected growth," said Donna Leger, President, Central States Manufacturing.

"In order to provide our customers with the best service and for us to extend our delivery service north, an additional manufacturing facility was needed. We are excited about this opportunity and look forward to supporting the growth of the northern Great Plains and the community of Hartford," she said.

Making the most of one's humble ... [cached]

Making the most of one's humble beginnings also was the theme espoused by the keynote speaker for Thursday's meeting, Donna Leger, the president of Central States Manufacturing Inc. That company opened its fifth manufacturing plant last year in Mount Airy's Piedmont Triad West Corporate Park.

Leger said Central States was formed in 1988 in a small facility in Rogers, Ark., and gradually has expanded with plant locations in several states. It makes and delivers metal building components to commercial and residential customers.
She indicated that adherence to basic values has helped the company prosper in an era when the construction market that utilizes its building components has floundered.
Central States is an employee-owned company, which its president said gives each worker a stake in its success. The company also maintains an open-book philosophy in making all financial information available to personnel and devotes a portion of each year's profits to the less-fortunate.
One thing Central States has done in that regard is give a $100 bill to every employee at Chrismastime and asked them to "bless someone in need in the community" with the money. This has resulted in numerous success stories, Leger said.
Along with its other values, every company meeting begins with a prayer, she said.
Leger also told the audience how she grew up humbly in Oklahoma, where her father struggled to support his family. But he managed to instill a valuable lesson in her. "What my dad taught me ... was that education was very important," she said.
