2 eateries lose 4 Diamond ratings
Donna Kreutz, spokeswoman for Westward Look, said the resort expects to reclaim the rating next year. The timing of the review was during the sale of the resort, so we were unable to provide details about what the plans for the resort were, Kreutz said, adding that she doesn't expect the resort will lose business as a result of the rating.Within the next year, the resort expects to renovate some of its guest rooms into two-bedroom suites with hot tubs, add a second ballroom for events, expand its wellness center and create a themed outdoor pavilion for events, she said.Westward Look also received four stars in this year's Mobil Travel Guide. As for the Arizona Inn, owner Patty Doar, daughter of Isabella Greenway, who built the Inn originally, said her property has had the best season it has had to date. We've received a good amount of national attention, she said, explaining the Inn made the Conde Nast 2001 Gold List for best place to stay and was one of the top 50 small resorts, inns and lodges as rated by Zagat. For a property like ours - we're 70 years old - AAA's requirements and vision are incompatible without historic and unique identity. ... that's what brings guests to us, Doar said. For example, she said, AAA requires a different style of drapery and rods than the wrought-iron works used at the Inn and wants furniture to be a particular way in the rooms. In ours, each room is decorated differently, Doar said. While Westward Look and Arizona Inn dropped off the list, five resorts remained on the list. They are Loews Ventana Canyon, Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa, Sheraton El Conquistador, The Golf Villas at Oro Valley and The Lodge at Ventana Canyon.Of them, the Sheraton has been on the list the longest, with 17 consecutive years, followed by Loews and The Lodge. The others have been on for five years or fewer.Five restaurants also made the list, including The Tack Room, demoted in November from the Five Diamond list. The other four are Anthony's In The Catalinas, Daniel's, The Gold Room and The Ventana Room.
