Although Option D originally included eliminating the emergency generator, it was added back into designs when complications arose, according to Don Mills of Mills Whitaker.
The new fire suppression system in the rehabilitation design requires the use of a fire pump to operate, but in accordance with local, state and federal fire codes, the pump needs to be connected to a reliable power source. The electric power grid is not considered a reliable power source, according to Mills. In order to keep an electric fire pump, an emergency generator is required, unless a diesel fire pump is installed instead, said Mills. Wed need to go to a diesel fire pump instead, which is much more expensive and complicates the project, Mills said.

"The building was constructed in 1913," said Don Mills of Mills Whitaker Architects."In 1914 it opened as an elementary school."Mills went on to discuss the changes that will be made to the facility, which include renovating a former boiler room into a classroom, lowering the floor of a basement crawl space in order to raise the ceiling height, and increasing the area on the first floor to create wheelchair access."All of the changes that affect FAR are interior," said Mills. But the Brimmer Street facility has always been a school, architect Don Mills reminded the attendants, and in a historical district the first priority "should be retaining and restoring the original use of the building."
