Donald H. Bouyer, Ph.D., University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Donald H. Bouyer has been working in the field of rickettsiology since 1998 with a particular focus on the mechanisms of pathogenesis, epidemiology and vector biology of rickettsial diseases. The goal of his research is the identification of rickettsial genes and gene products that are important for the establishment of the infection process in the host organism to which anti-rickettsial therapies may be developed. His focus of expertise is in microbial pathogenesis, rickettsial genetics and development of animal models. Dr. Bouyer also has extensive experience in biocontainment level 3 research (BSL3) and has been serving as director of University of Texas Medical Branch's select agent BSL3 laboratory since 2003. He has trained 19 international fellows from Brazil, Colombia, Cameroon, Mexico Slovenia, Peru, and Portugal in the fields of diagnostic and molecular rickettsiology, vector biology and epidemiology and has served as dissertation mentor for 1 Ph. D. student (now graduated) and as a research co-mentor for 1 M. D. fellow and 5 medical students.
