Commissioner Don Truell made a motion to contribute an extra $20,000 to pay for additional bleachers and/or other expenditures. The $20,000 will only be paid if the combined contributions of City of Thomasville, Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center and the Tom A. Finch Community YMCA match that amount.
"I made the motion because it is a city school here in Thomasville," Truell said. "The city (of Thomasville) said they couldn't do it."
Truell added the outdoor track at Thomasville High School is used by numerous residents for exercise.
"This is a track used by the entire city," Truell said.

The system would pay $30,000 a year with the first payment due by Dec. 31 and on the same day for the next four years.

The Davidson County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution 5-1 during its meeting Thursday that would ensure funds obtained by the quarter-cent sales tax referendum be used specifically for public schools only.

Commissioner Don Truell was absent.

The referendum will appear on the ballot during Tuesday's primary election. Proceeds from the sales tax increase would be used to finance construction of a new high school in northern Davidson County.

If approved, the quarter-cent sales tax increase is expected to generate about $2.4 million each year by adding an additional 25 cents per $100 spent, according to estimates provided by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.

If the referendum fails, the next option for commissioners could be to increase property taxes by 2 cents per $100 of valuation, which could generate $2.5 million in revenue annually.

Commissioner Fred McClure recommended removing wording that states funds from the sales tax hike would be used for economic development and other capital needs in Davidson County.

Besides being used to fund a new high school, McClure stressed funds obtained from the quarter-cent sales tax referendum should also be used to retire debt and be used for other school projects.

Vice chairman Todd Yates cast the dissenting vote.

"We don't have any control over where that money goes," Yates said.
