The contest allowed Northern Valley's Chuck Fessenden, in his 36th season with the Huskies, to talk with Pike Valley's Don Melby, in his 30th year with the Panthers.

Melby was a Scandia native and a favorite son, playing for the Flying Swedes during their run to three consecutive state titles from 1970-72. After graduating from Fort Hays State in 1978, Melby returned to Scandia and went into the construction business with his brother

"I wasn't even going to teach," Melby said.
...
That one-year contract turned into a long term deal, and Melby has been signing his name on the dotted line every year since.
"It's not like I went through high school thinking all I want to do is coach football and teach," Melby said. "I didn't plan to be a teacher, but I got started in it and found that I really enjoyed it."
Melby spent two seasons as an assistant football coach, which happened to be the first two years Scandia and Courtland consolidated to form Pike Valley. When he was named head coach, there was concern by some fans that he would naturally favor kids from Scandia, his alma mater, over the players from Courtland.
"We had a time where parents were counting kids on the field, asking which ones were Scandia kids and which ones were Courtland," Melby said.
...
Melby heard some naysayers, but for 32 years has made it work.
"People told me that you can't go back to your hometown to teach and coach, but I feel fortunate," Melby said.
...
In addition to his teaching and coaching duties, Melby appointed himself head groundskeeper of the town's football field, which is located directly across the street from his home. If he ever chooses to retire, he'll have the best view of Pike Valley home games from an expansive deck on the front of his home.
Melby wants his team to be a source of pride for the community and wants the field they play on to be the same. That attention to detail led to one of his biggest disappointments last fall.
"I live right near the west end of the football field," Melby said.
...
Melby and his wife, Judy, married in 1983 and raised two daughters, both of whom graduated from Pike Valley.
...
"I've been away a lot and my wife would tell you that I'm never home," Melby said.
...
Melby and Fessenden aren't ready to call it quits, but they've been around long enough that they will recognize the warning signs if they ever begin to creep into their daily routines.
...
"You get older and you get tired more, and I definitely know this won't go on forever," Melby said.
