Longtime Brandon businessman and Pik-A-Dilly RV Centre president Don Main has become the first-ever Canadian chairman of the American Automobile Association.
"This is kind of completing the circle, if you will," Main told the Sun in an interview. He was elected to the position at the AAA's 112th annual meeting at its headquarters in a suburb of Orlando, Fla.
"I don't have anywhere else to go, so this is kind of my last hurrah. I confess to you, this has been a personal goal for the last few years. Given it had never been done before, my assumption was that it just probably wasn't possible."
Main is president of Main Group Inc., and a former Brandon business person of the year as chosen by the Brandon Chamber of Commerce. From 1996 to 1999, he served as chairman of CAA Manitoba, where he was a director since 1991. He was elected to the AAA board in 2006.
...
But eventually, Main said that it became apparent there was no obstacle to his path to the chairmanship, and that he had as much of a chance as anybody else.
"As it turns out, I guess I impressed some people, and they like what I've been doing and I did come to them with a great deal of experience."
And that's no boast. Main chaired all of the national CAA?committees during his stint with that organization, and several important committees with AAA as well, including the audit committee and the mergers committee. And for the last few years, he has been a member of the executive committee for AAA as well in the role of vice-chair.
"Don Main has played an important role in supporting the growth of our association - for both CAA Manitoba and CAA National," said Mike Mager, president and CEO of CAA Manitoba.
...
A lot of people tend to think of both CAA and AAA as a tow truck service, Main said, which is principally the largest reason why members join the association to begin with.
"But it's far more than that," Main said. "We have a very high-profile public affairs division in the U.S. We have a highway traffic safety foundation that's extremely active ... it does in the neighbourhood of about $15 million worth of research on an annual basis."
And now as the chairman of the organization, it will be his job to decide "where we're going, how we're getting there and the timeline to do so."
Issues surrounding the "connected car" as well as the looming possibility of driver-less cars are among the varied agenda that Main said he'll be dealing with during his two one-year terms as chairman.
...
Currently, 46 of 50 states in the U.S. have adopted the law, but Main said drivers are not co-operating.

Main will serve as chairman of the board for the 55 million member, not-for-profit federation for two, one-year terms.
The newly elected chairman served as chairman of CAA Manitoba from 1996 to 1999 and has been its director since 1991. He was elected to the AAA board in 2006, serving as secretary from 2012-2013 and vice-chair from 2013-2015. Don Main has been an integral part in maintaining AAA's position of leadership in the automotive industry over the past decade, and in his role as chairman, he will ensure we maintain that position to enhance the power of the AAA brand and the relevance of AAA's offerings."
In 1999, Main was elected to the CAA Board of Directors and from 2003 until 2005 he held the position of chairman. He continues to provide advice and counsel to the CAA Board. Throughout his CAA career, Main has chaired a number of key committees, including the Accreditation, Governance, Standards and Performance, and Audit Committees.
"I'm honored and, at the same time, humbled by the trust placed in me as I assume the leadership role in this wonderful association. This is an exciting time for AAA. As we navigate thru the challenges of connected car issues, we must not lose sight of our responsibility to our core products, our commitment to be the motorist's advocate and continue to build on our reputation of quality, trust and peace of mind to our 55-plus million members," Main said.
