Finding the Right Pressure Washer

Pressure ratings and gallons per minuteThese two factors need to be considered in relationship to each other, according to Don Holdridge, national paint division manager at Mi-T-M Corporation.
"It comes down to a mathematical equation," he says. "They're lightweight and won't corrode," says Holdridge.

Time is money, so buy a quality pressure washer, advised Don Holdridge, paint division manager for Mi-T-M in Peosta, IA. "If you go out and buy from the home center chains, you're going to get what you pay for," he said."When a piece of equipment is down, it's not making the contractor any money. He may spend extra up front, but in the long run, he's going to come out ahead." It's more of an industrial pump," said Don Holdridge."You've got a lot of pumps on the market that are more of a price point, that really don't hold up.You're looking at a 300-hour pump versus an 800-to-1,200-hour pump." Like everything else, you want a good quality frame, said Holdridge. That quality is determined by the thickness of the base plate, among other things. But Holdridge thinks bolted-on handles are superior to welded."We like to bolt them on, in case you ever need to replace them.A lot of the other companies, it's a weld, and then if the weld breaks, the frame is pretty much shot.We also use a powder coated finish, which is a stronger finish that won't rust or chip away." The Nozzles Holdridge explained his company's color-coded nozzles range from a zero-degree blasting nozzle, a 15-degree chiseling nozzle-most commonly used in the paint industry-a 25-degree nozzle for flushing, and a 40-degree washing nozzle.Holdridge emphasized using the right orifice size.Just as with a paint sprayer, the wrong size can contribute to loss of pressure, as can a worn-out tip. "Your water pump is there to pump the water to the end of the gun and wand," he said."Your actual nozzle creates the pressure. For every pressure washer, each nozzle can be different in relation to the machine you're using." The Accessories Other little goodies can contribute to the making of the ultimate pressure washer.Additionally, Holdridge cites non-marking hoses as a nice extra: "When you're cleaning and you go to clean up your work area, you drag a hose across your customer's driveway and it leaves streaks."Not good.A longer hose is also a good addition. Most pressure washers come with a standard 50-foot hose, but McSwain recommends 100. Additionally, Holdridge said a lot of his models add a strainer, which keeps debris out of the head of the pump. This involves cleaning out the strainer as opposed to cleaning out-or possibly damaging-the actual pump.
