If temperatures drop into the single digits, they need to be inside if possible, Hemstreet said. Smaller and younger animals need to be more protected, he said. Dogs, like humans, will shiver when they're really cold, Hemstreet said. Uncontrolled shivering or immobility means the dog is too cold, he said. The other big factor with really cold temperatures is making sure pets have fresh water, Hemstreet said.

County voters seated R.L. Icard, Don Hemstreet, Randy Burns and Enda Weller in Tuesday's election.
"The (school) board needs to be able to re-establish credibility in the community," Hemstreet said on Election Day. Icard received 4,817 votes; Hemstreet 5,412 votes; Burns 4,566 votes; and Weller 5,419 votes. Hemstreet garnered 98.19 percent of the votes in the central district. Hemstreet, a local veterinarian, has served on the school board in the past. He ran this campaign based on re-establishing credibility and trust between the school system and the community.
