CONCORD, N.C. -- Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE:TRK) has promoted veteran motorsports businessman Don Hawk to the new position of vice president of business affairs while Mike Burch was named vice president of business development and Jessica Fickenscher was promoted to director of special projects.
Hawk, a 22-year veteran of the motorsports industry, will oversee several of SMI's subsidiaries, including 600 Racing, SMI Properties and The Source International.He will also coordinate the company's food and beverage operations and will continue to be the lead director in the Motorsports Authentics joint venture.
Prior to joining SMI in November 2007 as vice president of special projects, Hawk assembled a broad-based motorsports résumé.His career started in 1986 as director of Winner Ford Motorsports and he was general manager of Alan Kulwicki Racing in 1992 when Alan Kulwicki claimed the NASCAR championship.Hawk then served as president of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. from 1993 until 2000 when he formed Hawk Sports Management where his clients included Dale Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and NASCAR.
In 2005, Hawk became director of regional racing development for NASCAR and was responsible for research and development related to NASCAR's weekly racing series and its regional touring series.Among the projects he coordinated was the development and implementation of composite stock car bodies and spec engines for the sanctioning body's regional touring series.

According to an industry source, Don Hawk and NASCAR have parted ways. Hawk has served as the NASCAR Director of Regional Racing Development - which oversees the touring divisions, including the Busch East and Whelen Modified Series - for the past three seasons. Hawk, 48, has been involved in every aspect of short-track racing and is widely known and respected in the motorsports industry. He is a graduate of Philadelphia Biblical University. Hawk is perhaps best known within the industry for his long association with the late seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt.
From 1993-2000, Hawk advanced through the ranks of Dale Earnhardt Inc., eventually becoming the organization's president. Prior to joining DEI, Hawk was general business manger for Alan Kulwicki Racing. He continues to handle Kulwicki's estate for the family of the 1992 NASCAR champion who died in a 1993 plane crash. Hawk also is considered one of the pioneers in the NASCAR-related memorabilia business.

CONCORD, NC - Don Hawk, vice president of business affairs for Speedway Motorsports, Inc., was named the inaugural recipient of the Bruton Smith Award during the 2011 U.S. Legend Cars International and INEX Corporation Championship Banquet held Jan. 21 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The award captures the spirit of its namesake, SMI chairman and CEO, O. Bruton Smith and recognizes someone with a passion for Legend Car racing and the promotion of it.
"Don has worked very hard to grow and expand this part of our company," said Smith.
Hawk was unanimously selected by a group of managers from U.S. Legend Cars International and INEX for his outstanding achievements, selfless drive and determination for company success.
Hawk worked previously as manager of Alan Kulwicki Racing and also served as president of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. before joining SMI in 2007.
After receiving the award, the typically animated Hawk was left stunned and speechless for a few moments.
