It is sorta neat to be born on your birthday," says Don Gettys.
"I was the first in my family to be born in a hospital. I had no teeth, no hair (that is still the case), no money and no occupation (which is now the case again)." Gettys recently announced his retirement and officially ended his 46 years of ministry, 25 of which were in the Georgia-Cumberland Conference, on Jan. 1, 2012. Don graduated from Indiana Academy and then Andrews University. He and his wife, Cynthia, walked down the aisle of the Pioneer Memorial Church in the morning for their graduation and again down that same aisle in the afternoon for their marriage. After he graduated from the seminary in 1968, the couple pastored for 10 years in the Michigan Conference - at South Haven, Bangor, Covert, Hartford, Paw Paw, Lawrence, Otter Lake, Judeville, and South Flint. While serving in Michigan, on July 24, 1971, Gettys was ordained at the Michigan Camp Meeting. After Michigan, the couple moved to the Carolina Conference, where they pastored in three churches: Lenoir, Hickory, and Arden. In 1987, they were called to the McDonald Road Church in McDonald, Tenn., where Gettys has pastored for the past 25 years. During his long tenure, the church nearly tripled its membership to almost 1,100 members. The McDonald Road Church also claims title to owning the second-oldest Adventist church website in the world and continues to have more than 10,000 viewers watch or listen to sermons each week. Gettys has also helped plant several new churches, most recently, the East Ridge Church in Chattanooga. Gettys estimates he has baptized more than 1,000 people in his 46 years as a pastor, the largest baptism being when he baptized 76 people in one day in Michigan. He has conducted more than 12 evangelistic campaigns and has no less than 600 sermons on the internet. Gettys' years of ministry were also blessed with many mission trips. In 2009, he traveled to Panama and baptized about 25 people while there. Gettys enjoyed being involved with his church, particularly the youth. He's been a Master Guide for 37 years and enjoyed attending Oshkosh and other Pathfinder outings with his club. In addition to leading his church family, Gettys has been active in the community, serving as the president of the Collegedale Kiwanis Club, where he has been a member for the past 24 years. He has also served as president of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Greater Collegedale Adventist Radio Club, a fitting position since Gettys is a Ham Radio operator with an advanced class license. Gettys has no intention of slowing down much in retirement. In fact, he plans to help out with Maranatha projects and mission trips. He is also an avid gardener, planting about 20 100-foot rows of sweet corn each year, and a machinist who builds model steam engines in his basement with his lathe and milling machine. His next project is to build a 10-foot-long steam traction engine. When complete, it will weigh roughly 1,500 pounds. He enjoys attending old tractor and engine shows and is currently restoring a Ford 8N tractor. In preparation for his retirement, Gettys built a shop that he will use to work on various woodworking projects.
