Don Button, Grant County Emergency Coordinator Planning Section Chief for the weekend workshop Don Button is the Coordinator of Grant County (KS) Emergency Management. He is a Kansas Certified Emergency Manager, as well as an ICS instructor. Don is the Chairperson for the Southwest Kansas Regional Emergency Planning Council (Homeland Security), which consists of members from 18 counties of SW Kansas, a member of the KS IMT, and board member of KS SART. Don has been deployed to several Federal Disasters including Hurricane Katrina (2005), Greensburg Tornado (2007), SE Kansas Flooding (2007), Louisa County Iowa Flooding (2008), and Anderson Creek Fire in Barber County (2016).

Button Named Top 2007 EM Professional You are here: Home > Public Safety > Emergency Management > Button Named Top 2007 EM Professional > Grant County Emergency Management Coordinator Don Button was presented with the 2007 Kansas Emergency Management Professional of the Year Award at a ceremony and reception held at the Grant County Courthouse Tuesday, November 6, 2007.Don Button is pictured with County Commissioner Carl Higgs, Emergency Management Secretary Vivian Button, County Commissioners Madison Traster and Marty Long, Kansas Emergency Management Association President Laura Harrison and Ulysses City Administrator Bud Newberry.Cathy Hernandez of Finney County Emergency Management nominated Don for the award."Don has been instrumental in the formation of Regional IMTs.He responded to assist other agencies during the three major disasters occurring in Kansas in 2007.He aided area counties affected by the ice/snow storm disaster this past winter, while ensuring his own county was taken care of, answering questions by telephone and helping those counties with their local declarations of disaster.He was one of the four emergency managers requested to respond to Greensburg and Kiowa County after their devastating tornado; and he also was requested to respond to the flood emergency in Montgomery County""Don is looked on as the leader in our region," said Hernandez.Button volunteered as assistant EM coordinator for 17 years in Grant County.In May 2001, he was hired as EM Coordinator, after the retirement of Lavon Walters.His status was part time and in January 2003 he became full time Coordinator and remains the only EM Coordinator in the State of Kansas to be jointly paid by city and county governments.
