"We've been doing it since April the hard way, by car," said Doane Hadley, president. "We've been able to spend more time with the customers."

BizTech Solutions is a provider of business solutions such as data capture and records management. Through a system called unified communications, Hadley said the company saved money by scaling back its office space while keep staffers connected in their cars with laptops. Now, Hadley is adding a 42-foot-long mobile home he will equip with computer systems to manage his operations on the highway - and show his customers how they can likewise save.
Hadley said the motor-home office will be on the road in January, with a crew of two stopping up to twice per week to work with customers. The vehicle also will be used for demonstration purposes at trade shows. He plans to drive the motor home in the winter to work with his West Coast customers. "It will be my traveling office," he said.
Hadley said BizTech cut its overall monthly overhead costs by $8,800 by adopting a virtual office strategy. The company closed an office in Des Moines, Iowa, and reduced its headquarters needs in New Jersey by going virtual and retaining the same staff. Hadley said making the change cut his office expenses down to $4,300 in November, compared with $13,100 in November 2008. He said that translates into $105,000 saved annually through these changes.
BizTech has a staff of 26 across the country, with six in New Jersey operating virtually from their own homes and the road. The company retains a physical headquarters in Piscataway, but with reduced operations. "Earlier this year, we decided that we just don't need the office," Hadley said.
Hadley said he will extend more collaboration services to his customers, offering his own company as an example. "We want to expand on that and help our customers understand the benefits sooner," he said. There is a learning curve, he said, for clients to grasp the potential savings: "Some of our traditional customers don't really get it."
Hadley said economic pressures pushed the company to go virtual. "When gas prices went up, we let some people work from home to save some money," he said. Hadley said he turned to wireless broadband connections for communications, and moved the software solutions to a data center in Parsippany. After gas prices stabilized, he said, the virtual office strategy remained in place, though at least twice per year BizTech brings its personnel together to compensate for the lack of face time in the virtual environment.
