Dino Asanaj, the New York representative of Kosovo's "provisional government" in exile, told conference participants in a keynote speech that his people's economy is not impoverished and in ruins only due to the past three months of conflict.
"Since 1989, when Serbia forcefully abolished Kosovo's autonomy, our economy has witnessed a shocking decline in output," he said.
Once homes are rebuilt in the estimated 1,000 villages that were rendered virtually unlivable as a result of Serbian aggression and destruction, heavy industry will have to be revived, says Asanaj.
"The Trepça mines and processing facilities have enormous economic potential," he said. "Coal reserves, estimated at 12 billion tons, combined with the potential of existing thermal plants, have provided and can provide in the future energy not only for Kosova, but even for parts of neighboring countries. Agriculture remains another pillar for Kosova's economic development. It is estimated that pre-conflict levels of agricultural output were sufficient to feed the entire Kosovar population. With investment and modernization, agricultural production will increase."
Asanaj added that "construction will become a booming business in order to fulfill the needs of large-scale projects for the development and improvement of infrastructure, and the needs of a rapidly expanding population."

A delegation from the Provisional Government of Kosova met with members of the Albanian Caucus in the United States Congress Washington DC, May 22, (Kosovapress) Representatives of the Provisional Government of Kosova based in the US, Dino Asanaj, its spokesperson Shinasi Rama, and legal council Martin Vulaj, met with their homologue of the Albanian Caucus in the US Congress, Democrat Eliot Engel, and others.
In the name of the Provisional Government of Kosova, Mr. Asanaj requested assistance from the US Congress, including the arming of the KLA. "Arming the KLA will allow them to better assist the Kosovar people and defend them from Serb barbarism" said Asanaj. Asanaj also requested that the arm embargo be lifted and the continuation of NATO bombing in order to weaken the Serb army until they conform to the demands made by NATO. Representative Engel stated that the present situation requires the unity of all the political forces inside the Kosovar community. Mr. Asanaj informed the Congressman that the Provisional Government of Kosova, led by Prime Minister Tha?i, and Kosova Liberation Army will continue to play a unifying role for Kosovars. Asanaj added that Rugova himself signed the agreement in Rambouillet on the 23rd of February 1999, in which the political and military elements of Kosova would unite behind a coalition government which will serve as the provisional government until the conditions are created for a free and democratic Kosova.
The leader of the Albanian delegation, Mr. Asanaj, informed Representative Engel and other members of Congress about the situation on the ground inside of Kosova and the recent KLA successes, the only force inside Kosova fighting against the Serbs. He noted, that despite their success, the struggle is imbalanced, and it is only after the KLA is provided with the sophisticated weapons they need, that they can expand the area of operation and better defend the Kosovar population on the ground. Members of Congress have been informed of the difficulties arising from the lack of food and medication which the internally displaced need. In addition, Mr. Asanaj informed his audience of the intolerable conditions in the camps of Albania and Macedonia. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this list send a message to majordomo at In the body of the message include: UNSUBSCRIBE KCC-NEWS From mentor at Wed May 26 16:21:12 1999 From: mentor at (Mentor Cana) Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 16:21:12 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [kcc-news] U.N. Mr. Dino Asanaj is the official representative of the Provisional Government of Kosova in the USA.
---------------- Dino Asanaj:: The international role must be totally clear, that after a million have been expelled from Kosova, after a million and two hundred thousand others are still in Kosova without food or shelter, that have not received any assistance from the international community for 75 days, after 75 mass graves, rape camps, concentration camps, after rivers of blood, and the use of human shields, Kosova and its legitimate leadership, the Provisional Government, led by Hashim Tha=E7i, and the victims have the right to choose the future of Kosova, and that right can not be taken away from them. There is no solution that can resist the demands of the people. We should organize ourselves as a united body around the Provisional Government and the KLA.The international community can stop the war with Serbia but when it comes to the future of Kosova, it is the people of Kosova who should decide. ------------------
Please call the media and ask why they are not reporting the fact that the Kosovar Albanians are not part of this agreement.
