It was like a small family," said Dick Cottam, a spokesman for the Spokane Police Department. He said the two coworkers, who shared a motel room with Doerring, were also from Iowa and work for R&M Metals.Their names aren't being released because they are witnesses to the crime.Company officials said the two returned to Iowa for the funeral. No one has been arrested in the slaying as of Friday, and Cottam said a organization of Spokane-area business owners called Secret Witness has put up a few thousand dollars as a reward for information about the gunman. He said the city's police force has solved 92 percent of their recent homicides.Investigators believe the robber didn't chose the R&M Metals crew at random and had inside information about them."I think somebody must have tipped this guy off that these guys carry cash," Cottam said.He said it's his understanding that the company paid the employees in cash.He said the robber also knew there were three men who stayed in the motel room. The robber demanded money, Cottam said. When the two said they didn't have any cash, the intruder told them he'd wait for the third man --- Doerring --- and held them at gunpoint, Cottam said.Doerring arrived 30 to 45 minutes later and, seeing the revolver, made a grab for the weapon, Cottam said. The robber pulled bask and told him not to try it again, Cottam said.
