Dianne Edmondson, Denton County Republican Party chairwoman, shared the party's collective disappointment in the ruling and said it was never any intention of the party to suppress any potential voters.
"The intention of the Republican and Democratic parties are to see as many people as possible participate in the voting process," she said. "We [just] want those people to be eligible [and] this was just one of the safeguards to make sure that happened."
Looking at what lies ahead for the voter ID law, Edmondson expects the issue to be taken up at the next legislative session "to look at this law and see if there is any way to reduce these unintended consequences with different language or requirements or something."
The Supreme Court ruling is moot ..., 16 June 2015 [cached]
The Supreme Court ruling is moot on some levels due to Texas having its own state constitution and the definition of marriage having been decided to be between a man and woman, said Dianne Edmondson, Denton County Republican Party chairwoman.
She said she expects that should the court rule in favor - that, as she put it - some overly politicized county clerks will try and issue marriages before state officials have time to study the Supreme Court ruling and mount any counterattack to it.
Clerks in Bexar and Travis counties have said they will be ready alongside Dallas County.
"These are left-wing liberal county clerks and they would relish the opportunity to go against the Texas Constitution and the traditions that have for thousands of years defined marriage," Edmondson said.
She noted state legislation that passed during the recent session that would protect pastors from being forced to perform marriage ceremomies for homosexual couples if the pastors' religion doesn't endorse that kind of union.
"I'm not a lawyer," Edmondson said.
