decorating experiments have produced some laughable results, but she
has not yet violated her
single rule: "Don't burn the house down."
wanted to do a pastel Christmas tree one year, so she
painted strings of the big, old-fashioned lights in white to mute the bright-colored bulbs."I never thought about the heat," says Butler, owner of Illinois Design Center.

Another year, she
deliberately knotted and tangled strings of the medium-sized lights - a nightmare scenario for some people - to resemble clusters of grapes.
